Carrie's quilt "town privies"

We are on the last block of Carrie's quilt.  I so wish there was more stories.  This has been a lot of fun.  This was also the most confusing story when I listened to it on the video.  I will give it my best shot and tell what I think she meant.

"This is a privy.  Out in the country, there were very few privies.  In town there were some and they had them before people had bathrooms.   We could tell you a lot about privies.  As kids during a break from school, we would go down the alleys and gawk at the outhouses.  We had to see everything we could see, the teachers didn't watch us as closely as they do now."  Carrie Henderson

I figured they would also have outhouses in the country also.  I found it interesting that they didn't.  I would be curious what they did????!
